Chapel of Light and Sound

Spring 2025

The concept that drove this project began with a single word: mindfulness. As a way of experiencing the world, through breath, movement, and stillness. How can architecture guide visitors to become more grounded and present? The Chapel of Light and Sound unfolds as a physical meditation. As visitors move towards the chapel, there is a rythmic sequence of compression and expansive spaces. Inhale and Exhale.

The Chapel is located at Cave Run Lake in Eastern Kentucky. The form is orientated on the cardinal axis, moving towards the beach as visitors progress towards the chapel.

Visitors are guided through a choreography of movement that isn’t linear—it pulses. Moments of tightness, when walls converge and ceilings lower, slow the progression forward and heighten awareness of material textures and the soft sound of cascading water. These compressed spaces create a sense of pause and inhale. Mindfulness is not always found in motion, but often in stillness. Along the circulation path, small alcoves of reflection are carved out—intentional pauses within the journey that ground visitors through yoga, prayer, or simply sitting quietly and returning awareness to the body.

Triangular geometry reinforces this rhythm. The form is faceted and angular, where the shapes of the walls and floor choreograph the tension and movement. Triangles point, pull, lean, they shape how you walk, how you listen, and how you breath. The geometry follows and reinforces the rhythm of mediation.

This unfolded section follows the journey towards the chapel. First, visitors are drawn into a large, open entryway. As they progress foward, they are guided through a physical meditation. Spaces breathe in and out, grounding minds of visitors to the choreography of this site. Ultimately, they reach the chapel itself— the final exhale.

The final compression occurs just before reaching the chapel—a central vestibule where all paths converge before arriving together at the final destination. The concluding chamber is still. Light washes gently into the space, and the air is quiet. The journey does not culminate in a dramatic gesture, but in a moment of calm. It is a place that draws you back to yourself, to your body, and to the surrounding landscape. Water meets the shore, light softens, and the triangular form opens fully toward the horizon. And you exhale.
